As Computer Science (CS) drives the digitalisation of nearly every aspect of modern life, it is vital that it reflects the diversity and variability of the real world in order to develop systems that address a wide range of societal needs. Digital technologies and artefacts influence all domains of life as they transform the world we live in, including society, the economy, and culture. Technological development and systems design are intrinsically intertwined with social progress and change. They are, in fact, the flagships of our societies. But by whom are digital systems designed and built and for whom? Whose values do they embody, and whose interests do they serve?

Recognizing a growing need to embed inclusion and diversity principles as both a value and a practice within Computer Science education, research and innovation ecosystems, our initiative aims to the establishment of an ERCIM Working Group that will address Inclusion and Diversity enquires in Computer Science, Informatics and Mathematics, in ICT and Research and Innovation process.

There are many excellent initiatives in different ERCIM members though rely on personal commitment. Consequently, effort is fragmented due to lack of consolidation of knowledge and lack of resources. We suggest to take a more systemic approach that could potentially result in inclusive organisations in everything they do, research, teaching, administration, leadership. This will help moving from excellent initiatives to sustainable change.

Specifically, the Inclusive Digital Futures: Developing Technology and Culture Working Group” aims to explore how Computer Science discipline could actively promote inclusion and diversity in the digital space as well as in its working ecosystem and its human capital. We welcome people in research, administration, and leadership to bring together multiple perspectives.

The establishment of the above-mentioned Working Group adds value to multiple ERCIM activities. Specifically, it could demonstrate commitment to Responsible Research and Innovation and strengthen institutional reputation and international competitiveness. It would increase the visibility of the work already done at the level of each Member and share best practices since ERCIM disciplines face structural imbalances in participation. It would align with EU policies and funding frameworks that emphasize in inclusion and add scientific and research benefits. It would strengthen the ERCIM Fellowship program by attracting diverse talented researchers. It would position ERCIM as a leader in inclusive excellence with in Europe. Moreover, ERCIM News publication on relevant themes reach out thousands of researchers. Last but not least, from the Human Capital Task Group point of view, it can help promoting exchange and connections among ERCIM members.

This Working Group should give emphasis and value to research activities among its members, developing projects and organizing workshops and/or events for cultivating research and development aiming to embed inclusion and diversity in the ICT ecosystem (ie.in technologies, in education, in research and innovation processes and in the ICT workforce).
